Who would have thought that 25+ years ago a suburban Chicago girl would marry a Southern gentlemen, that met in Arizona?
John and I married in 1998. A few years later and several moves to different states, we ended up in Eastern Washington state in 2007.
We have two boys, Jake and Wade. We are a close family and do everything farm related together. Both boys are included in any decision making pertaining to the farm. They both have their own growing herd of cattle. We are also active in both FFA and 4H.
We farm over 500 acres. Plus we have several 100+ leased acres. We raise cows and pigs for butcher. We also sell weaner piglets for those who want to raise their own hogs and showpigs for our local county fairs. Our family cuts and bales our own hay that we feed our animals. We also harvest our own barley that we grind for our pigs and cows.
We are a small farm that has a huge respect for our animals and the land they graze on.
We sell butcher hogs. Our hogs are born and raised here on our farm. They are fed locally raised grain that we grind and mix ourselves. We sell by the half or whole hog. Wear's Custom Meats (formally called Rusty's) in Deer Park, WA does the processing of the animal.
We also sell beef by the whole or half. Please keep in mind it takes longer to get a steer to butcher weight.
We also sell weaner pigs and showpigs. If interested in any of these, please fill out the contact us form and we will get back to you.
We raise our butcher hogs to about 300 pounds live weight. We charge our customers $4.00 a pound hanging weight. Hanging weight is when the carcass is hanging in the butcher truck skinned and halved.
The standard cuts can vary by customer. But generally the cuts you receive are chops, ribs, roasts, bacon, sausage, and hams.
So when you buy a whole hog you can expect roughly 140-150 pounds of pork. A general rule of thumb is 1 cubic foot of freezer space for 30-35 pounds of meat.
We raise our steers to 1200-1400 pound live weight. We charge $5.00 a pound hanging weight. Hanging weight on a steer is roughly 750-900 pounds.
Standard cuts on a beef are ground, steaks, brisket, roasts, stew meat, ribs, and soup/dog bones.
Roughly you can expect 375-450 pounds of beef.
Our cows this year dropped their calves in March and April. It does take a year and a half to get a steer to butcher weight. Please check back if wanting beef.
Our cattle graze on pasture in the early spring to about October. We believe in rotational grazing to get the best for both animal and soil.
Winter months our cattle are housed here at home on Happy Hill. Here they get fed round bales that we have cut and baled ourselves. They are also given free choice Vitalix tubs, which is a mineral block. This will help them maintain their weight and give them the proper nutrients they need while pregnant.
When it is time to finish out our steers for butcher, we grain them on barley for 30 days. This will help in the marbling of the meat.
From birth to butcher, it takes 6-7 months to raise a hog. Our pigs are given plenty of area to run and be pigs. Free to dig in the dirt, flop in the mud, and relax in the sun. Our butcher pigs are "free fed". Which means they have access to feed at all times. Our feed is a mix that we grind right here on our farm. It is a blend of peas and barley with the mineral pack that pigs need to thrive.
Hope you had a chance to look at the pictures of our farm. We take pride in how we raise these animals from birth to butcher.
